Didn't rise until 10.30 so had to rush to get to Joe's shop by 11.00 to give him the key to the flat.

Today we had planned to get a bus to Bahari Beach, but unfortunately we missed the 12.00 bus from the New Africa Hotel and the next one wasn't until 2.00, which wouldn't have been worth it.

After a few Pepsis and iced coffees here and there, we made our way to Joe's shop. During our wanderings I retched and nearly puked in the street. The temperature was well into the 90s today so the town was particularly evil-smelling. Hardly surprising considering the garbage-disposal system in operation here. People just dump all their rubbish on designated street corners, where it lies and rots until the dustbin-men come to collect it in wicker baskets. These urban rubbish dumps absolutely reek, and cockroaches breed like crazy.

At the shop Joe arranged for one of his employees to book our rail tickets to Zambia. A 1st-class sleeper costs only 5,000 Tsh, which is excellent value for money.

We went round to Joe's in the evening and, after a drive to the beach, we all ate a tasty Indian meal. When we got back to the flat we lay awake until four in the morning. It was a particularly humid night, and also there was a very loud noise caused by water pouring off the roof.
