Awoke at eight, withdrew some money from the bank and checked out of the YMCA.

Naturally our first task was eating breakfast, so we found the Wimpy. After eating our meal we asked a white employee why the Wimpy, and most other restaurants, shut so early. It turned out that Johannesburg is an extremely dangerous place for white people after dark. It's quite risky even after 5, when there are no police in the city. So, in walking back from the restaurant last night, we had risked being hacked to death and robbed.

After getting a bus and checking into a Youth Hostel in Fairview (not too bad at R18 per night), we walked back into town to sort a few things out. It was quite difficult getting hold of Kodak film and a decent diary, but an agent of Thomas Cooke brought us great success. Not only was I able to purchase $200 worth of traveller's cheques, I also managed to get $100 cash! The cashier must have thought I was round the bend, so surprised was I at the ease of the transaction. It's good to be back in civilisation.

Fairview, Johannesburg.

Dinner in the evening was at an Italian restaurant near the hostel. Absolutely fantastic: We each had a whole Peri-Peri Chicken. With a couple of beers each, it came to R46.50.

The rest of the evening was spent watching telly and drinking beer.
