Got up fairly early, but not as early as the girls, so we all made our way to the falls, two of us with empty stomachs.

On the way there, Olly and I booked a couple of nights in a chalet, which costs Z$26 instead of Z$20.

Also on the way to the falls, we organised the evening's entertainment—a "booze cruise—and our train ticket. We are travelling with Kathy and Diane to Bulawayo in the same compartment. For the four of us the cost is only Z$132.

The falls were just as impressive as the day before, and Olly agreed that the Zimbabwe side is much better than the Zambian.

Right at the end of the falls this side there was some commotion after Olly spotted what appeared to be a dead body. It turned out to be a bit of a mystery because it was clear through binoculars that the body had a skull for a head. A guide said he had never seen it there before.

After loafing around in our chalet and going for a tasty curry, it was time for the cruise. It started at 4, ended at 6, and was really excellent. We sipped champagne and observed hippo and crocodiles on the banks of the Zambezi. Not bad for Z$65. Also on our boat were a South African (British) couple and a Swede. We arranged to meet up in the Victoria Falls Hotel.

Standard of dress was a big issue at this point, so I dressed up to the nines in my tracksuit bottoms and rugby top. Olly wore his brightly coloured shirt and a pair of trousers borrowed from Diane that clashed in quite an appalling way with the rest of his attire.

We were not too confident about getting into the Victoria Falls Hotel. I looked scruffy, Olly looked ludicrous, and Diane was already pissed. I think it was Kathy who carried us through.

When we reached the dining room we had a choice of paying Z$38 for a fantastic, eat-as-much-as-you-want meal, or paying nothing and stealing food from the cheese and biscuits table. An easy decision: I've never eaten so much cheese and so many biscuits in my life.

We drank beer and talked for a while until we four were the only people left. There was an elderly Dutch couple at the table next to ours, so we invited them over. A good move, because they promptly ordered drinks for us. The Dutch guy seemed pretty rich because, apart from the fact that he was staying in a flash hotel, it transpired that he owned a company that sold earth-moving vehicles. And his itinerary for tomorrow was flying to Hwange National Park.

Eventually they went to bed and the night manager showed us to the exit.
