Today we had a safari in Matopos planned at 12.30, so we were in no hurry to get up.

Olly successfully 'phoned Leslie in Capetown and arranged to see him this time next week. Apparently there are "half a dozen" letters waiting for us at his place; hopefully he really does mean exactly six.

The safari in the afternoon was OK for Z$50 each; but I wouldn't really have liked to pay more. The cave paintings were quite interesting to look at, even though it is not known whether bushmen produced them one thousand or four thousand years ago.

Cave paintings at Matopos.

I don't know how well Chester, our taxi-driver, knows the park, but we did not manage to see very many animals. However, our main objective was to see black rhino, and we did see one at VERY close range and a family of three from binocular range. Amongst the few other sightings were giraffe, warthog, impala, and ostrich.

An interesting diversion from the safari was the climb up to Rhodes' grave on World View. Here we saw an employee of the park call nearly a hundred lizards to eat from his hand.

In the evening the four of us found a place to eat called Pizzaghetti. It was the epitome of African incompetence. I ordered a medium steak and my own choice from the salad bar. My steak was well-done, and Olly, Diane, and I had to walk over to the salad bar with the waiter. We pointed to what we wanted on our plates until he said we could have no more—despite the fact that there was plenty of room. Kathy was not having much luck with her lasagne, either. Forty minutes after she made the order, the waiter informed her that she would have to wait a while for her meal to thaw out.

We all finished our meals in time to see Rambo III, which was just as appalling as it was the first time round.
