Woke about 7.00 with a slight hangover caused by the previous evening's excesses. Our first job was breakfast at the Wimpy followed by the hiring of a couple of bicycles so we could get to the crocodile ranch.

My bike was absolutely shit. The tyres, although non-inflatable, were soft, and a loose hub meant that the rim was in constant contact with the brake pad. This made hills very difficult to climb and, on descent, the bike would come close to a standstill if not pedalled.

The crocodile ranch was interesting. They had crocs that had hatched last December and they had 10ft adults, with a few intermediary sizes in between. It was incredible to watch the bigger ones. One of them had a piece of flesh that he was unwilling to share with his friends. The contest for the meal was extraordinary. They would lie perfectly still for several minutes; then there would be an incredibly quick burst of aggression from another crocodile trying to claim some of the nosh; then they would become statues again.

Spencer's Creek Crocodile Ranch.

A crocodile usually eats only its own body weight once a year, so the long periods of inactivity are necessary for survival. The crocodile also has a very slow metabolism.

The crocodiles we saw were pretty awesome-looking at around 2m, but many crocs longer than 5m have been spotted.

In the evening we went to the camps-site bar to meet the girls after their safari at Hwange but they didn't turn up. Instead we spoke to a guy from Michigan, who had a broken hand. He was a bit boring but friendly enough and he has travelled widely. He gave us some good news about India. When he was in Delhi he needed only $1 a day for a bed, food, and local transport!
