Arrived in Johannesburg at just after ten in the morning. It was nice and sunny and already 26°. After breakfast at Wimpy, Olly bought some American Express travellers cheques so that we could pick up mail from their offices.

We then found the cinema and watched Boyz n the Hood, a film about violence in the black communities of Los Angeles. It was OK.

All we had time for then, in order to be back to the safety of the bus station by 5pm, was a quick trip to the top of the tallest building in Africa (Carlton Tower—220m) and a meal at the Wimpy.

In the Translux "departure lounge", a dickhead told Olly not to lie down on the couch or he would have to leave the premises.

When we got on the bus, we were somewhat nervous about the absence of whites in the crew. There was just a black driver and a black steward. Coincidentally, there were no pillows provided, no running water, and the food was crap. An Afrikaner conspiracy, perhaps?
