India £=47 rupees

Didn't sleep at all on the 'plane due to my overeating and numerous cups of coffee.

Immigration and customs were no problem, but the official at passport control was very slow.

There were no Visa agents at the airport so it was lucky that we had travellers cheques. Without them we wouldn't have been able to pay the 35 rupees to get into town.

The area around the airport is really shitty—the poorer part of Bombay.

Bombay is very large. We were travelling for about 1½ hours before we reached our destination. We had already decided to stay at the Salvation Army because we had heard that it was the best value place. It is in quite a pleasant area—near the Gateway of India and the Taj Mahal (Hotel, that is).

The Salvation Army was only 55 rupees for a dormitory bed and it's not too bad.

We didn't feel too tired when we got ourselves settled in, so we set off exploring town. We saw a restaurant and popped in for a cup of tea. We felt hungry after the tea so we ordered a Vegetable Biryani for only 35 rupees. We also bought a pillow-case each, as the pillows at the SA are disgusting.

Mereweather Road, Coloba, Bombay.

In the evening we ate at a place called Alps, near the SA. Vegetable Biryani was only 23 rupees, but beer was relatively expensive—650ml of London Pilsner was 35 rupees.
