Nairobi, Kenya (£1= 52 Kenyan shillings)

Touched down at Nairobi at about 6.00 Kenya time. We were surprised to find ourselves surrounded in thick fog, but pleased to feel lovely warmth in the air, even at that early hour.

After finding a Barclays Bank at the airport (we could hardly miss it), and withdrawing 2,500 shillings, we got a taxi to the tourist information office to find out where the youth hostel is. We were charged 360 shillings, which was obviously a rip-off, but there was no alternative immediately available to us—such as getting a bus instead.

We were amazed to discover that Nairobi is a really beautiful city. It consists mainly of clean, modern buildings and there is lush greenery everywhere.

We got a map and the location of the YHA from the tourist office. We spent the day sunbathing and wandering around the city. The weather was really beautiful—almost too hot to sunbathe comfortably at the hottest time of the day.

The late afternoon was quite exciting when Olly went to the private hospital round the corner from the hostel and had a hepatitis injection. It cost him 800 shillings and the needle was about a millimetre thick!

In the evening we went to the Uhuru Restaurant in Uhuru Park. It was basically a disco hall with tables and chairs arranged round the side. We got a Chicken Chasseur with chips for 50 shillings and beer was 30 shillings for a pint; the latter we thought distressingly expensive.
